Lima Events

OutfestPeru

This gay, lesbian and transsexual film festival has been running since 2004. The programme includes highlights of musicals, documentaries – covering such topics as the plight of LGBT activists in other countries – and a selection of feature films chosen by organisers to promote LGBT issues and awareness. In the past, the festival has been held earlier in the year.

Venue: Centro Cultural de España.

Pisco Sour Day

Peruvians love their favourite drink so much they talked their government into dedicating an official day to it. Día Nacional del Pisco Sour (National Pisco Sour Day) has been going for nearly a decade, and Lima gets into the spirit nicely with events, tastings and parties in honour of the zingy cocktail made with the Peruvian white brandy Pisco, frothy egg whites, Angostura bitters, sugar syrup and fresh lime juice.

Venue: Various venues.

Procession of the Lord of Miracles

Lima’s patron saint, Our Lord of Miracles (Señor de los Milagros), is celebrated in October when an elaborate bier is carried through Lima’s streets accompanied by chanting, clouds of incense and the tolling of church bells. Devotees flock in, many drawn by the saint's reputation for healing. It is an awe-inspiring spectacle, charged with emotion and vibrant with the saint's colour, purple. There are also food stalls, concerts and a firework display.

Venue: Streets of Lima.

Señor de los Milagros Bullfight Festival

The who’s who of the bull fighting world head to Lima’s Plaza de Toros de Acho in November for this hard-fought tournament. This event is certainly not everyone’s cup of tea – the festival features the kind of full-on bull fighting that has many open-mouthed in horror – but like it or loathe, it this is a well-established Lima tradition and the festival is incredibly popular with both locals and visiting tourists.

Venue: Plaza de Toros de Acho.

Lima Anniversary (El Aniversario de Lima)

The founding of Lima by the conquistador Francisco Pizarro in 1532 is marked each year on the anniversary of that day with a mix of popular, religious and military events. A street parade takes place in the morning and a mass at midday in the cathedral. Flowers are laid around the Pizzaro monument and a programme of music and dance entertains the crowds that gather in the early evening. Fireworks close the show.

Venue: Central Lima.

Carnavales

Lima might not go as carnival crazy as some other South American destinations, but it does have its own brand of festivities. Parties take to the streets with water-filled balloons that are thrown at, well, anyone who happens to be around. Things have gotten a little out of hand in the past with things like paint being added to the mix, but generally the celebrations stay just that.

Venue: Throughout the city.

Fiestas Patrias

Independence Day is a highlight of Lima’s calendar, with enthusiastic celebrations engulfing public spaces across the city. Peru’s independence from Spain was announced on 28 July 1821, and on 27 July each year festivities erupt with music, processions and fireworks in Plaza de Armas the previous night. The country’s president marks the occasion with a speech from the government palace, and on the final day, a military parade rounds off the celebrations.

Venue: Throughout the city.

Lima Latin American Film Festival

The region’s latest screen offerings are watched and celebrated at this yearly event, which honours acting and film production talent across Latin America. With its screenings of feature films, shorts and documentaries the festival in Lima has steadily become an established and revered event on the media calendar throughout the continent. Cinemas and cultural centres across the city take part, including the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú Cultural Centre.

Saint Rose of Lima

Santa Rosa de Lima' was the name bestowed upon a woman who dedicated her life to caring for the sick – Isabel Flores de Oliva. Her shrine, in the historic centre of Lima, attracts a continual flow of pilgrims who come in hope of a miracle or a cure. On her day, pilgrims compose letters, detailing their needs, and leave them at the well in the garden of the hermitage, or in the shrine itself. The anniversary is a holiday celebrated throughout Peru, but especially in the city of Lima and the town of Santa Rosa de Quives.

Venue: Santuario de Santa Rosa.
