Camel Racing

Races start around 0700 or 0800 at Al-Atraf Camel Racing Club on a track 7km west of Al-Jahra. The camel racing season is between October and February.

Hala Festival

Month-long cultural festival celebrating the spring and marked with shopping extravaganzas.

National Day

National Day marks the foundation of Kuwait as a country in 1961. This country-wide celebration includes public meetings, a firework display and people getting together to eat, drink, sing and dance, and generally celebrate their national identity. Traditional dress is usually worn for the occasion. Fireworks displays on Green Island, off the Corniche, cultural programmes and the dressing of the city in coloured lights.

Liberation Day

One of the most important dates for the people of Kuwait, Liberation Day is celebrated every year on 26 February and commemorates the liberation of Kuwait by the Allied forces from seven months of Iraqi occupation after the 1990-91 Gulf War. This day is characterised by people getting together to revel in the spirit of freedom.

As the trophies behind reception testify, this no-frills hotel on a busy intersection is a favourite with regional sports teams. The refurbished rooms and bathrooms have an Arabian flourish with gilt-edged décor and furnishings that come as a pleasant surprise after the rather casual foyer. It also has a swimming pool and health club.

Hotel ibis Kuwait Salmiya

With a decent location near the Scientific Center, this budget chain hotel also affords some great sea views as well. The rooms are small, but clean and well appointed, and Wi-Fi is available throughout the hotel. There's also an on-site gym and a buffet breakfast to set you up for the day.

Mirage Suites Hotel

What the Mirage Suites Hotel lacks in looks and luxury, it makes up for with its sea views. The rooms are basic, but comfortable and well maintained, although try for one that feature vistas over the Arabian Gulf. A short taxi ride from the Salmiya area, the hotel also has its own swimming pool, gym and sauna.
